OverPower is a collectible card game produced by Fleer Corporation originally featuring characters from Marvel Comics and later from DC Comics and Image Comics as well. The game was initially launched in August 1995 and is no longer in production. One of its problems was that the card backs of Marvel, DC and Image cards were different, requiring the use of opaque card sleeves if one player wanted to mix them. In the game, two players went head-to-head with teams of four heroes and villains. Unlike most other collectible card games of the mid-1990s, OverPower was very distinct strategically and structurally from The Gathering.
Marvel Interactive only produced only two sets, Image and X-Men, both of which were fraught with delays and printing difficulties. After X-Men, the Overpower product ended up in limbo. Eventually, Marvel decided to sell the exclusive right to produce a collectible card game based on Marvel characters to Wizards of the Coast. Though this may have been a wise move by Marvel, it was bad news for Overpower fans. Wizards of the Coast's CCG strategies were very tournament-oriented, and Overpower was not very attractive as a tournament game. With all the rare but useful promotional cards, the prospect of Overpower tournaments would be a lose/lose situation for the producer: either tournaments will be unequitable because of certain extremely hard-to-get cards, or, if those cards were reprinted, long-time collectors and fans would be alienated. In addition, Overpower was not well-designed for long-term production. There are game-balance issues involved in producing more and more specials for already-done characters, and virtually all popular characters were already produced. Several years later, Wizards of the Coast released the X-Men TCG. The game did not sell well, and ultimately the license ended up in the hands of Upperdeck. Currently, the VS System is one of the most popular card games on the market and has an extensive organized play professional circuit.
