Realms of the Haunting is a British adventure game, played from the first-person perspective, released in 1997 by Gremlin. The game itself is highly atmospheric, featuring a fully realised and well thought out gaming environment. Although it is often overlooked by the wider gaming public, it is considered a classic by many. The 4 CD-ROMs that make the game demonstrate the amount of FMV footage and audio that are a key part of the experience. The graphics appear dated now, as compared to some other games of the time such as the Quake series, as the 3D engine used in this game, borrowed from Gremlin's own Normality uses relatively low screen resolutions, leading to graphics which appear very blocky and pixellated by today's standards. The game is perhaps one of the last 3D games to continue to use sprites for characters, rather than 3D models. This is somewhat mitigated by the high quality of the animations used, and the frequent use of cut-scenes.
